Siemens and Downes Theory of Connetivism
George Siemens is well known for creating the Theory of Connectivism, but he is also a researcher for learning networks specializing in digital domains. He is also known for creating massive open online courses (MOOC) and currently holds a position on the Board of Directors for MOOC Research Initiative, which evaluates teaching and learning processes.
In 2005, Siemens identified 8 Principles of Connectivism:
- Learning and knowledge rests in diversity of opinions.
- Learning is a process of connecting.
- Learning may reside in non-human appliances.
- Capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently known.
- Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed for continual learning.
- Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill.
- Accurate, up-to-date knowledge is the aim of all connectivist learning.
- Decision-making is a learning process. What we know today may change tomorrow. The right decision today may be the wrong decision tomorrow.
Stephen Downes is also well known for being a designer in the field of online learning and instruction. He partnered with George Siemens in 2008 to create a MOOC based on Connectivism.
